I am me.
I am a woman, a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife.
I have a white mother and a black father.
I am a black woman viewed as not really black by some.
I’ve been told I have “white people hair”.
I’ve been called the N-word.
I was a police officer for two decades.
I loved being a police officer.
It wasn’t just a job; it was a calling.
My husband is a white police officer.
He is a good man who loves me unconditionally.
I see things through the eyes of a woman.
I see things through the eyes of a person of color.
I see things through the eyes of a police officer.
I will listen.
I will use my voice.
I will not allow hate to burrow into my heart.
I am me.
Det. Wade I just watched the news report on Dateline chronicling you and Detective Miller’s painstaking efforts to bring those two persons to justice. Your dedication, attention to detail, compassion and humanity shown to Michella and Jenni, their families, children, (especially girls), and women, is proof that there are still good people in the world. I’m a male of similar ethnicity and I can relate to what you have written, experienced, and feel. May you continue to experience fulfillment both personally and professionally. I await the release of your book.
